School
Middle School: An alternative charter school designed for inner city, middle school youth. Genesis serves youth needing academic & social development to successfully return to traditional public school. Genesis offers certified teachers, support staff, licensed mental health counselors, cultural/performing arts, computer instruction & media production. Genesis offers 3 different academy level programs for students. They are the Leadership Academy Program, Scholars Academy Program and the Virtual Education Academy Program. Each program is geared to helping the student to become responsible and a self-sufficient learner.
Counseling Services: Mental health services are essential to the Genesis students' success. Genesis provides comprehensive mental health/counseling services including: assessment/evaluation, individual/family/group counseling; behavioral intervention/management, and community/resource support referral. Groups focus on teen violence, drug prevention, and positive family/social relationships. The department is unique as a certified mental health provider service.
Mentoring Program: The mentoring project recruits, screens, trains and supports adults to work with high risk middle school students. Year-round mentors and/or tutors help youth build self-esteem, positive values, expand opportunities and increase their potential.
The Strategic Reading Program: At Genesis increases students' reading skills and is trading frustration for success. The one on one instruction with students uses a multi-sensory approach to develop the necessary underlying reading skills. This allows the students to be able to gain two or more years in reading skills during one school year. This program also involves training of the classroom teachers in techniques that help the students increase their comprehension and learning processes. Being able to easily read and understand classroom material allows each student to gain knowledge and succeed in their education.
Tennis/Academic Program: Genesis School is a National Junior Tennis League (NJTL) Chapter and was recently approved for the United States Tennis Association (USTA) National Capacity Building Program. Students participate in a NJTL before and after school program. In addition, students play in the Genesis USTA/NJTL Junior Team League, receive homework assistance and attend computer literacy and life skills classes.
