In 1975, Genesis School began as a VISTA GED tutoring project
preparing Westport
High School
students for the Adult Basic Education exam. Over the next 30 years,
Genesis became accredited, secured United Way membership, and received
a series of national awards for its mission and accomplishments.
After 25 years of service to at-risk youth, Genesis became a
charter school in 1999 through the sponsorship of the University of
Missouri–Kansas City. Accredited by North Central, Genesis became
the first alternative, charter school in Missouri to receive a ten year charter
school renewal in 2005.
A few Genesis highlights include: North Central
accreditation and United Way
membership since 1980; U.S.
Department of Education, Blue Ribbon School of Excellence Recognition in
1990 and a successful Joint Capital Campaign in 1999 with the Boys and
Girls Clubs that paid off the Thornberry
Center mortgage.
Historical
partnerships, as listed below, have empowered Genesis to be a catalyst
for youth, program and community development.
