Core Beliefs:
* Students deserve a fresh start on their educational journey.
* Learning structures should be adaptable to meet individual needs.
* Effective education requires a partnership between school and parent.
* Effective learning requires appropriate resources and qualified staff.
Impact:
At the Genesis School in Kansas City, we believe all children deserve a fresh start on their educational journey. We believe that learning should meet individual needs. We believe that effective education requires a partnership between school and parent. And we know that for certain that caring, qualified teachers and specialized staff can make all the difference in turning a young person’s life around.
Our responsibility is vast because the Genesis School is the only charter middle school in the Kansas City area serving at-risk and high-risk inner city youth during those vulnerable middle school years, grades 5 – 9.
We know how to address the special needs of young people and have been doing so for over 30 years. We have a proven track record. And when we are successful keeping young people in school, we help fortify the community’s skill base and enhance family cohesivenessHistory
Genesis School is a nationally recognized (five times) alternative, middle school for inner-city youth in Kansas City, Missouri. Since 1975, Genesis has been more than an academic setting preparing students for success. It has been a second home, providing a caring atmosphere structured on the African proverb “it takes a village to raise a child.” For Genesis students, the proverb is more than just a catchy statement, it is a functional reality.
Today, Genesis understands what it means to look at students as individuals. After 30 years, staff knows that a caring learning environment actually remove barriers. Striving to promote critical thinking and effective problem solving, teachers challenge students to utilize knowledge gained in a process that promotes self-understanding. Genesis not only addresses the academics in each core subject areas, but license mental health counselors provide individual and group therapy. Genesis’ outreach to students and parents has resulted in strong and consistent gains in student performance, both academically and socially.
